Active Minds

By developing and supporting chapters of a student-run mental health awareness, education, and advocacy group on campuses, the organization works to increase students’ awareness of mental health issues, provide information and resources regarding mental health and mental illness, encourage students to seek help as soon as it is needed, and serve as liaison between students and the mental health community.

American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

The AACAP, a non-profit organization, is a membership based organization, composed of over 7,500 child and adolescent psychiatrists and other interested physicians. Its members actively research, evaluate, diagnose and treat psychiatric disorders and pride themselves on giving direction to and responding quickly to new developments in addressing the health care needs of children and their families. AACAP widely distributes information in an effort to promote an understanding of mental illnesses and remove the stigma associated with them; advance efforts in prevention of mental illnesses, and assure proper treatment and access to services for children and adolescents.

American Association of Suicidology

The organization promotes research, public awareness programs, public education and training for professionals and volunteers. In addition, AAS serves as a national clearinghouse for information on suicide.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

A non-profit organization involved in a wide-range of suicide prevention initiatives: groundbreaking research, new educational campaigns, innovative demonstration projects, critical policy work and assistance to people whose lives have been affected by suicide through community-based chapters. Associated with the Suicide Prevention Action Network USA, the organization helps to lead a grassroots constituency that can advocate for the policies and legislation at the state and federal levels to advance suicide prevention.

American Psychiatric Association

The American Psychiatric Association, founded in 1844, is the world's largest psychiatric organization.  It is a medical specialty society representing more than 38,000 psychiatric physicians from the United States and around the world. Its member physicians work together to ensure humane care and effective treatment for all persons with mental disorders, including intellectual disability and substance-related disorders. APA is the voice and conscience of modern psychiatry.

American Psychological Association

Based in Washington, D.C., the American Psychological Association (APA) is a scientific and professional organization that represents psychology in the United States. With 150,000 members, APA is the largest association of psychologists worldwide. The mission of the APA is to advance the creation, communication and application of psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people's lives.

The Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA) is the leader in advocacy, education, training, and research for anxiety and stress-related disorders.

Mental Health America of Summit County

An affiliate of Mental Health American, MHASC educates the community about mental illnesses and mental wellness. The group advocates for individuals and families to ensure they receive appropriate care and treatment. It provides referrals to services and programs throughout Northeast Ohio and encourages and supports recovery by promoting good mental health! Mental Health America of Summit County is committed to improving our community's understanding of the mental health spectrum; wellness to illness.

Mental Health Screening

Screening for Mental Health, Inc. (SMH) is dedicated to promoting the improvement of mental health by providing the public with education, screening, and treatment resources. SMH pioneered the concept of large-scale mental health screening and education programs in 1991, with its flagship program, National Depression Screening Day (NDSD). SMH programs-provided both in-person and online-educate, raise awareness, and screen individuals for depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, alcohol use disorders, and suicide.

NAMI (National Alliance on Mentall Illness)

From its inception in 1979, NAMI is a greassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness. NAMI's support and public education efforts are focused on educating America about mental illness, offering resources to those in need, and insisting that mental illness become a high national priority.

NAMI Ohio

NAMI Ohio (National Alliance on Mental Illness of Ohio) was created in 1982 by a small, dedicated group of family members to provide mutual support, education, and advocacy for individuals and families affected by serious brain disorders. Over the years, our membership has expanded to include family members, mental health consumers and providers, community mental health boards, mental health organizations and other supporters.

National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders

ANAD is a non-profit corporation that seeks to prevent and alleviate the problems of eating disorders, especially including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorders.

National Center for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

The mission of the National Center for PTSD is to advance the clinical care and social welfare of America's Veterans through research, education, and training in the science, diagnosis, and treatment of PTSD and stress-related disorders.

National Eating Disorders Association

The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by eating disorders. We campaign for prevention, improved access to quality treatment, and increased research funding to better understand and treat eating disorders. We work with partners and volunteers to develop programs and tools to help everyone who seeks assistance.

National Foundation for Depressive Illnesses

The International Foundation for Research and Education on Depression (iFred), is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to helping research the causes of depression, to support those dealing with depression, and to combat the stigma associated with depression. iFred is dedicated to Bringing Depression Hope.

National Institute of Mental Health

The mission of NIMH is to transform the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses through basic and clinical research, paving the way for prevention, recovery, and cure.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), a free, 24-hour hotline available to anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. Your call will be routed to the nearest crisis center to you. Information and materials also available.

Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation

Founded by a group of people with OCD in 1986, the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF) is an international not-for-profit organization made up of people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and related disorders, as well as their families, friends, professionals and others.  The mission and goals of the IOCDF are to: educate the public and professionals about OCD in order to raise awareness and improve the quality of treatment provided; support research into the cause of, and effective treatments for, OCD and related disorders; improve access to resources for those with OCD and their families;and advocate and lobby for the OCD community.

Ohio Department of Mental Health

The Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH) works to assure access to quality mental health services for Ohioans at all levels of need and life stages. It is estimated that nearly two million Ohioans will need mental health services during their lives for problems ranging from situational stress to severe and chronic mental illness. Last year, Ohio's public mental health system provided care to more than 300,000 people, including 100,000 children.

Red Flags, Youth Depression Information

The Red Flags program was created as a school-based depression awareness and intervention program by Mental Health America of Summit County. It is funded by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and endorsed by the Ohio Department of Education for school districts in Ohio. Red Flags helps youth, parents and building staff recognize and respond to signs of depression and related mental health issues. The three-component program includes materials for building personnel, a 1-5 day curriculum for the students, and resources for parents and the community.

Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America's communities. In order to achieve this mission, SAMHSA has identified 8 Strategic Initiatives to focus the Agency's work on improving lives and capitalizing on emerging opportunities.

Suicide Awareness Voices of Education

The mission of SAVE is to prevent suicide through public awareness and education, reduce stigma and serve as a resource to those touched by suicide.

Suicide Prevention Education Alliance

SPEA's mission is to prevent suicide and promote recognition of adolescent depression through education and alliances with community partners. The group's goal is to cause at-risk students to seek and receive treatment from a mental health professional, as treatment is life altering and often lifesaving. SPEA saves families from the unfathomable loss of a child to suicide and helps teens to live healthy, productive lives. It was formerly known as American Foundation of Suicide Prevention of Northeast Ohio.

Summit County ADM Board

In an effort to maintain a safe and healthy community, the Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board provides a cost effective, efficient system of prevention and care for persons suffering from addiction and/or mental illness. The Board assures a client driven system of care for residents of Summit County with a priority for those individuals most in need.

Townhall II

Townhall II is a community-based agency serving Portage County providing crisis intervention, adduction treatment, counseling for sexual assault, prevention education and a free medical clinic. The agency is based in Kent, Ohio.

Wellness Recovery Action Plan

Mental Health Recovery and WRAP was started in 1989 as Mary Ellen Copeland began her studies of how people help themselves, get well, and stay well and her work received an important boost from the 1992 publication of the best-selling Depression Workbook. The mission of Mary Ellen Copeland's Mental Health Recovery and WRAP is to promote personal, organizational and community wellness and empowerment.

 

World Psychiatric Association (schizophrenia)

The WPA is an association of national psychiatric societies aimed to increase knowledge and skills necessary for work in the field of mental health and the care for the mentally ill. Its member societies are presently 135, spanning 117 different countries and representing more than 200,000 psychiatrists.

Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program

Yellow Ribbon is a community-based program that empowers and educates professionals, adults and youth. This is a program of people helping people. Our donations are from supporters in communities.

Addiction Screening

AddictionSurvivors.org is a not-for-profit organization (501c3 tax exempt status pending) dedicated to providing peer support communities for those with addiction disorders and their families and friends. These forums are funded in whole by individuals whose lives have been touched by addiction in one way or another.

Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous® is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

The American Council for Drug Education is a substance abuse prevention and education agency that develops programs and materials based on the most current scientific research on drug use and its impact on society.

Center on Alcohol Marketing to Youth

The Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth (CAMY) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health monitors the marketing practices of the alcohol industry to focus attention and action on industry practices that jeopardize the health and safety of America's youth.

Club Drugs

A service of the National Institute of Drug Abuse, the site provides information on current trends and stats for club drugs and other drugs of abuse.

Coleman Professional Services

Coleman Professional Services is a nationally recognized not-for-profit provider of behavioral health and rehabilitation programs that improve the lives of individuals, families and businesses in Northeast Ohio. The agency has offices in Portage County.

Ebased Prevention

The Ohio Resource Network for Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities is funded by the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addictions Services and the Ohio Department of Education.   The Ohio Resource Network will support administrators, teachers, parents, prevention professionals, faith leaders and others working across Ohio to establish safe, disciplines, and drug-free schools and communities.  The Network is a point of contact for information, training, and research as it relates to keeping communities and schools safe.  The Network is based at the University of Cincinnati's College of Education and will strive to become a source of assistance for all Ohioans interested in facilitating a positive, safe climate. 

Join Together

Join Together is a project of the Boston University School of Public Health. Since 1991, Join Together has supported community-based efforts to advance effective alcohol and drug policy, prevention and treatment. Join Together leads initiatives to help communities respond to the harms caused by excessive alcohol and drug use and provides free internet services supporting their efforts. 

Keeping Kids Drug Free booklet

This booklet provides ideas and examples about the skills busy parents can use to keep their children off drugs.  It was developed by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) through the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign also known online as www.theantidrug.com. This multidimensional effort, designed to educate and empower youth to reject illicit drugs, reaches Americans where they live, work, learn, play and practice their faith. www.theantidrug.com is a Web site that provides parents and other adult caregivers with strategies and tips on raising healthy, drug-free children. The site encourages parents to help their children with difficult issues by focusing on major concepts including love, trust, honesty and communication. Information from www.theantidrug.com is now available in Spanish at www.laantidroga.com and in various Asian languages (Korean, Cambodian, Chinese or Vietnamese) through the www.theantidrug.com home page.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving

The mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is to stop drunk driving and support the victims of this violent crime. By 1999, MADD had greatly expanded its work on preventing underage drinking and emerging research underscored our efforts to prevent youth alcohol use. MADD's efforts in this area were also encouraged and supported by the government, corporations, educators, the media and public.

Narcotics Anonymous

Narcotics Anonymous is a global, community-based organization with a multi-lingual and multicultural membership. NA was founded in 1953, and our membership growth was minimal during our initial twenty years as an organization. Today, NA members hold more than 43,900 meetings weekly in 127 countries. We offer recovery from the effects of addiction through working a twelve-step program, including regular attendance at group meetings. The group atmosphere provides help from peers and offers an ongoing support network for addicts who wish to pursue and maintain a drug-free lifestyle.

National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse Columbia University

The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University is the only nation-wide organization that brings together under one roof all the professional disciplines needed to study and combat abuse of all substances - alcohol, nicotine as well as illegal, prescription and performance enhancing drugs - in all sectors of society.

National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information

The National Clearinghouse for Alcohol Abuse and Addiction is overseen by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. SAMHSA's mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America's communities. The clearinghouse provides access to information and publications.

National Institute for Alcohol Abuse and Addiction

Part of the National Institutes of Health, NIAAA provides leadership in the national effort to reduce alcohol-related problems by: conducting and supporting research in a wide range of scientific areas; coordinating and collaborating with other research institutes and Federal Programs on alcohol-related issues; collaborating with international, national, state, and local institutions, organizations, agencies, and programs engaged in alcohol-related work; and translating and disseminating research findings to health care providers, researchers, policymakers, and the public.

National Institute on Drug Abuse

Part of the National Institutes of Health, NIDA's mission is to lead in bringing the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction. The agency supports and conducts research across a broad range of disciplines.  It works to disseminate and implement the results of that research to significantly improve prevention, treatment and policy as it relates to drug abuse and addiction. 

Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services

ODADAS is responsible in the state of Ohio for the development of a comprehensive statewide plan, emphasizing abstinence as its primary goal, to distribute federal and state funds for the prevention and treatment of alcohol and other drug addictions.
