Prevention is our first line of defense in protecting our children from the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol. October has been declared Substance Use Prevention Month to raise awareness of the importance of prevention and let communities know that everyone can play a role.
In Portage County, prevention begins in the classroom. Certified prevention specialists from Townhall II visit local schools to teach evidence-based programs designed to strengthen lifelong skills. Students learn how to make healthy choices, build positive friendships, boost self-confidence, communicate effectively, and resist peer pressure. These lessons give young people tools they can carry with them well beyond the classroom.
The Mental Health & Recovery Board funds this program because prevention works. “Prevention has always been very important to our Board,” said John Garrity, PhD, executive director. “We reach children early before they start using, we are protecting our communities and helping them lead happier more productive lives.”
Parents and caregivers also play a powerful role. Even if it doesn’t always feel like it, young people do listen. In Portage County, more than half of youth report that their parents are the reason they choose not to use drugs. Many also say they want to stay healthy—an encouraging sign for the future.
The good news is that most of the youth today is not using drugs and alcohol. It is vital that we continue to give them opportunities to build protective factors in their school settings and communities to help them thrive.
