Celebrate Recovery Walk
The theme of the 2026 National Recovery Month, “Recovery is REAL – Restoring Every Aspect of Life,” was vividly illustrated at the Mental Health & Recovery Board of Portage County’s Celebrate Recovery Walk on September 12. This event gathered real individuals and families, united in their dedication to supporting each other on the path to recovery. Participants not only walked together but also formed meaningful connections, ending the event by sharing poetry, heartfelt songs, and written expressions that reflected their experiences.
“Recovery is not simply about overcoming a substance use disorder or a mental health challenge. Recovery is about rebuilding a life,” said Aubrey Lattimer, Executive Director of the Mental Health & Recovery Board of Portage County, as she spoke to the crowd. “It can mean restoring relationships, finding purpose, gaining stability, reconnecting with family, returning to work, finding community, or simply waking up each day with a renewed sense of hope. And recovery looks different for every person.”
The walk reminds us of the importance of connection that plays in recovery. Recovery is strengthened through relationships, belonging, meaning, and purpose. Research shows that meaningful human connection rewires the brain for resilience, hope, and sustainable sobriety. These connections can make a substantial difference in an individual’s journey, offering support and understanding that are crucial for overcoming challenges.
“That is why events like this matter so much. They give us an opportunity to celebrate the people who have walked this journey, the families and loved ones who have supported them, the peers who have walked alongside them, and the providers and community partners who work every day to make recovery possible,” Lattimer stated.
At the conclusion of the walk, attendees inspired each other by sharing stories of hope and healing. Each narrative served as a powerful reminder that recovery is possible for everyone, regardless of where they are on their journey. It was a reminder that no one must face their challenges alone, and that together, the community can create an environment of support and encouragement.
