Portage County officers gathered this spring for a refresher training to reinforce the skills learned in their Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program. For some, it had been several years since completing the initial 40-hour training.

Organized by the Mental Health & Recovery Board and led by Portage CIT Coordinator Officer Josh Bartholomew, the training covered de-escalation techniques, crisis response systems, psychosis, juvenile behavior and treatment options, and intellectual disabilities.

Participants also toured a local withdrawal management facility and engaged in a discussion with individuals who have lived experience, gaining valuable firsthand perspectives.

Reading the article about CIT refresher training made me realize how important it is to keep learning how to respond calmly in mental health situations. It highlights how refresher courses update skills like communication and crisis handling.  I remember during a stressful semester, I used do my computer assignment so I could manage my workload and stay mentally balanced. It showed me that regular support and learning can really improve how we handle pressure and people.
